In episode 11 of Tome & Tome Again podcast, Jess and I discussed Scott Westerfeld’s 2005 YA dystopian novel Uglies, the first in the Uglies trilogy, about a world in which everyone undergoes surgery at 16 to become ‘pretty’.

We talk beauty messaging in the early 2000s and the concept of the ‘chill girl’ / ‘tomboy’, as the morally grey Tally adventures to a rebel settlement where people escape to live as ‘uglies’ for the rest of their lives.
