The Folk-Keeper (1999) by Franny Billingsley

A female coming-of-age story with many fairy-tale elements. There are moments of romance, overshadowed by strong themes of well-rounded self-discovery and empowerment. This story is fascinating, mysterious and rich with moments of fairy-tale and horror; all of my favourite things!
